Dear Governor Doyle, Senator Kohl, Senator Feingold and Attorney General Lautenschlager:

Wisconsin needs to do everything in its power to protect our Roadless Areas in the Chequamegon Nicolet. We need to petition for the complete protection of all 118, 714 acres of Wisconsin's Inventoried Roadless Areas from commercial logging and road building. Protecting our chance to restore functioning old growth forest requires us to join California, Oregon and New Mexico's lawsuit to re-instate the 2001 Roadless Rule and its protection of 58 million acres of America's wild and unfragmented forest lands. Wisconsin also needs to take congressional leadership in supporting federal legislation that elevates the 2001 Roadless Rule from an administrative rule vulnerable to the whims of any administration to federal law permanently protecting these important providers of clean water and quiet recreation.

Not only will this be the strongest first step toward restoring the old growth forest that once dominated Northern Wisconsin, but will be beneficial to protecting clean water river and streams including, Iron River, McCarthy Creek, Morgan Creek, Brunsweiller River and the East Fork of the Chippewa River. These are all important fishing and habitat rivers in Wisconsin's Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest.

Please respond.

Sincerely,
