Duluth Tribune Story on CNNF Plan

January 2004- HEC, Environmental Law and Policy Center, and other organizations settled our administrative appeal of the Chequamegon National Forest's (CNNF) Sunken Moose timber sale preventing nearly 1,500 acres of critical interior forest habitat from being logged. This unique settlement also improved protections for northern goshawk and red-shouldered hawks, two species that are harmed by indiscriminant logging and road construction. In addition, large snags (standing dead trees) will be created in adjacent red pine plantations, improving habitat for woodpeckers and other species needing these important forest components. These snags will one day fall and become down woody debris, adding important habitat to a forest lacking in large logs on the forest floor. Press Release

October 2003- HEC, in conjunction with Environmental Law and Policy Center, filed two federal lawsuits to stop the Cayuga and Northwest Howell timber sales on the CNNF. At this time, the Forest Service has been prevented from constructing roads and logging in these two important areas that are home to the pine marten, perhaps Wisconsin's most critically endangered species.

August 2003- HEC gave a 60 day notice to the Forest Service regarding the failure of the agency to plan for lynx recovery, despite the documented presence of lynx in the Northwest Howell project area in the Nicolet side of the CNNF. This resulted in the U.S. Forest Service delaying the cutting in the Northwest Howell timber sale and brought them back to the negotiating table with HEC.

July 2003- HEC's Forest Democracy Letter Drive won an extension and doubling of hearings on Chequamegon Nicolet National Forest Plan.

December 2002-HEC stopped the cancer-causing herbicide Balance Pro from being sprayed on millions of acres of Wisconsin corn fields.

July 2002- HEC exposed Wisconsin Southern Railroad's attempted cover-up of a major spill of feed corn in a Madison area creek resulting in cleanup and restoration.
